Before the new dam was built, the Rupert River was a majestic torrent; today, it’s barely a big creek. The land surrounding this river in the James Bay basin is home to both Hydro-Québec workers and the Cree. Steering clear of reductionist arguments or activist rage, Nicolas Renaud listens to people and explores the landscape and its history in all their depth. Thanks to expert editing, he is able to capture the complexity in all the power relationships in play, while his sensitive portraits and excellent observational sequences expose the human issues behind an ecological transformation. The big picture emerges as a poignant story about identity, and a celebration of the place’s almost poetic beauty.
